There’s a confusing mix of mockery and flattery that comes with being a redhead. “South Park” famously derided the recessive gene pool, and there’s a reason “redheaded stepchild” (among a slew of non-print-worthy slurs) is typically not a compliment. But salons everywhere must be running out of Red 5, because 2011 seems to be the year of the ginger. Maybe our generation was preconditioned by Ariel’s luscious locks in its Disney princess phase, but now that we’re all grown up and feeling adventurous, we’ve realized that flaming hair is just as possible as a fish-woman growing legs thanks to an octopusian spell. Unfortunately, the hat of the Irish doesn’t quite fit everyone. The speckled, porcelain skin, the matching eyebrows: It’s not easy to pull off the Grace Coddington (who just sold her memoirs to Random House! Eee!), the Lily Cole or the Emma Barker. We took a look at a few fakers to see when the red light gets a green light.
