Apple’s next iPhone and an updated iPad are inching closer to launch, sources told The Daily.

In recent months, reports suggested that Apple’s next iPhone would have a MacBook Air-like teardrop shape. However, a person familiar with the product told The Daily that the fifth-generation iPhone will look similar to the current iPhone 4 but with tapered edges, more like a hybrid of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS designs.

AT&T executives weren’t satisfied with the form of the iPhone 4, specifically how it fit — or didn’t fit — when being put in one’s pocket. A September launch is likely.

Rumors of another iPad first sprung up shortly after the launch of the iPad 2 in March. Some are calling it the “iPad 3,” which suggests that it would be radically different, but a person close to the project said that might not be the case.

Rather, it will probably be an upgrade to the current generation with a higher-resolution screen. There is no firm date for the rollout of this product, but after Apple’s recent supply chain woes were alleviated, it could be out before the end of the year, said the source.

Cellular carriers, like AT&T, will sell the device for as low as $199. Current data plans for the iPad on both Verizon and AT&T’s networks follow a monthly, pay-as-you-go model.

The new iPad would be heavily subsidized and would require a contract, similar to how carriers currently sell netbooks.

Apple’s idea is to put the devices into as many hands as possible to retain tablet dominance. It’s an important move, since the iPad finally appears to have competition. There are a new batch of tablets running Honeycomb, the tablet version of Android, and HP recently dropped the price of its webOS-powered Touchpad by $100.

Both AT&T and Apple declined to comment.
