It’s strange to call Ken Kaufman and Isaac Franco up-and-comers in fashion since they’ve been designing together for more than a decade — first at Pringle of Scotland, then Bob Mackie, then Valentino — but the gradual drip of their gowns on the red carpet has evolved to a steady stream in just the past year. Their brand, KaufmanFranco, has spent seven years at under-the-radar presentations, simmering in the glamour that recession-wracked America wasn’t quite ready for. Surrounded by painstakingly sequined gowns whose cuts evoke the mullet mantra “business in the front, party in the back,” Franco and Kaufman described their collection yesterday to a small crowd of editors. Liquid gowns pooled on the floor and jumpsuits masqueraded as haltered maxi-dresses in a flashback to ’70s glam. For a spring collection, though, the casual looks felt heavy — an asymmetrical butter-leather jacket was lightened only by the string bikini top underneath and a wrapped wool jacket seemed a bit much for even the chilliest spring night.
