The old adage says a picture is worth a thousand words, but National Geographic is upping the ante: The winner of the magazine’s annual photo contest will receive a $10,000 prize. He or she will also receive a January 2012 trip to Washington to participate in the National Geographic Photography Seminar.

Last year, more than 16,000 dazzling photographs by photographers in 130 different countries were submitted to the contest. This year — the deadline for submissions is Nov. 30 — again promises stunning entries from a diverse range of locales and lenses.

Enjoy this slideshow of the editors’ favorite entries from this week, and be sure to visit the contest homepage to submit your favorite shot for the chance to win.
