After carefully assessing the posture, obedience, grooming and personality of almost 1,500 well-prepped canines, the judges chose the handsome wire fox terrier as the winner of the 10th annual National Dog Show that was televised yesterday. Eira represents the best of a breed whose other poster pooches include Asta from “The Thin Man” movies and the cartoon hero Tintin’s pet, Snowy.
Eira’s win is her 17th best in show award. She bested a dalmatian, a whippet, a Bernese mountain dog, an affenpinscher, an Australian shepherd and an English springer spaniel in this year’s finals in Philadelphia.
In February, handler Gabriel Rangel will take the proud pooch to the Westminster Kennel Club Show. Should Eira — whose name is Welsh for “snow” — win that contest, she’ll be the third dog in history to win both competitions in a one-year span.
