The NYPD horse-mounted unit is one of the oldest in the storied police force. Dating back to 1871, the original members of the unit were former cavalrymen. It has grown from a force of 12 to approximately 130 officers and their horses. But while times have certainly changed since the 19th century, the unit still uses the same equipment — most of which officers make themselves, as they have since their first patrol.
