Celebs’ Mega silence

Famous voices who sang praises of shuttered file-sharing site go quiet

Saturday, January 21, 2012

The high-profile file-sharing site MegaUpload had suitably high-profile endorsements.

In a slick, four-minute-plus video produced by the company last year, more than a dozen celebrities expressed their love of MegaUpload over an upbeat melody.

They included A-listers such as Kanye West, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and Alicia Keys, whose husband Swizz Beatz was the celebrity CEO of the company, as well as Lil’ John, Floyd Mayweather, and The Game.

The company’s corpulent head, Kim Dotcom, also appears briefly in the video, singing, “It’s a hit!” into a studio microphone.

The song was a viral hit on YouTube, and got several hundred thousand views. Yesterday, a version of the video appeared on the site with the words “Megaupload is dead! :( .”

The likelihood of criminal involvement touching any of the celebs appeared remote. All were quiet yesterday on Twitter on the topic of the site’s closure; representatives for several did not return requests for comment.
